As a songwriter, Shawn strives to find the heart of the story; to seek out the emotional journey and write to that.

Patterson loves creating songs so deeply connected to the characters and story it becomes an inseparable extension of the project. When Shawn was approached to write the song, "Everything Is Awesome" (for The Lego Movie), he dug into the narrative to find the deepest emotional layers of the story. The end result was The Lego Movie franchise (and even theme parks) forever branded with a song so distinct and memorable, it earned him both the Academy Award® and Grammy® Award nominations.

Shawn loves writing songs that run an uncommonly wide range of genres, tones and moods: bombastic rock to emotional ballads to indie pop and even over-the-top show tunes.
